Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain
  • Position: PhD Student in Solid Mechanics
  • Topic: Computational and analytical modeling of multiaxial behavior of quasi-brittle materials (such as concretes, rocks, ceramics, polymer fiber composites etc.) at various rates of strain, particularly at extremely high rates of strain (on the order of 10000 per second) that results in comminution of material.

The work involves

  • development of advanced constitutive models for such quasi-brittle materials for use in the finite element analyses of test problems,
  • calibration of the constitutive models and prediction of material behavior in loading cases of interest using the finite element method coupled with the calibrated constitutive model.

The candidate is expected to work on the aforementioned topics in order to write scientific articles and a PhD thesis. The candidate must be able to program the computer and understand the previously written programs. In addition, the candidate is expected to use Abaqus with user supplied subroutines which the candidate will have to modify or create.

  • Eligibility: The candidate should have a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering in a topic related to Solid Mechanics. A strong background in Solid Mechanics is expected. Previous work on mechanics of quasi-brittle materials will be considered as key advantage, but it is not essential. The candidate should be fluent in both written and spoken English, and should be able to work independently.
  • Contact: The candidate should send a CV via e-mail to ferhun.caner@upc.edu. The selected candidate will be notified by August 1, 2013.
Fulbright-Masarykovo stipendium (juniorská kategorie)
Cardiff University, School of Engineering (Velká Británie)
  • PhD studentship in Nanomechanics
  • Applicants should have a First Class or 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in engineering, physics or applied mathematics (or equivalent).
  • Academic contact: Informal enquiries should be made to the Professor F.M. Borodich, BorodichFM@Cardiff.ac.uk, Tel:+44(0)29 20875909 Web: www.cardiff.ac.uk/engin
  • Administrative contact and how to apply: For further details or to apply formally please go to www.cardiff.ac.uk/apply and apply with reference to (FMB-AC2T-11).

The studentship is supported by Austrian Center of Competence for Tribology (AC²T) within the framework of a large collaborative project, X-Tribology. As it was stated by the sponsor, “For a close cooperation it is important that the PhD student make at least two secondments of 2 to 3 months at AC²T (second and third year)”; this means that it is expected that you will travel to Austria to make you secondments. The studentship will cover tuition fees at the home fee rate. The award will also provide an annual stipend.

The provisional topic of the studies is “Mechanics of Adhesive Contact in Applications to Nanotribological Systems: Biomimetic Solutions”. This topic assumes a collaboration with and visits to Functional Morphology and Biomechanics group led by Prof. S. Gorb, University of Kiel, Germany.

You will work on nanomechanical modelling of contact, friction and molecular adhesion at the nano/micro-scales under the supervision of Prof. F.M. Borodich and Prof. H.P. Evans. The studies will be applied to nanotribological systems that are governed by the physical processes applicable at the nanoscale. These include adhesion caused by van der Waals interactions and various surface effects. Fundamental understanding of nanoscale surface effects on contact and friction processes is a significant challenge and a key to success in this field. The PhD projects will focus on analytical and mathematical modelling and will involve collaboration with research groups in Austria and/or Germany.
