Examples

The proposed methodology for the discretization of surfaces described by STL meshes is demonstrated on two examples. The first one is the academic example used in Section 3 for the illustration of the extraction of the boundary representation. The uniform mesh of the object is depicted in Figure 14. A graded mesh with refinement prescribed along two parallel planes is shown in Figure 15. The perfect shape of the cylindrical parts of the object reveals that the STL mesh enhancement described in Section 4 has been applied.

The second example, more realistic one, is a propeller. The original STL mesh is depicted in Figure 16. The gathered boundary representation is sketched in Figure 17. And finally, the triangulation with curvature based element size control is presented in Figure 18. Although the original STL representation is rather coarse, the final mesh captures well the shape of the propeller.
