Adaptive Simulation of Materials with Quasi-Brittle Failure

This paper deals with analysis of quasi-brittle materials characterized by large nonlinear fracture process zones and highly localized damage. The adopted scalar damage material model is regularized using the nonlocal continuum concept. Since the crack trajectory is generally not known in advance an h-adaptive technique is adopted. To assess the distribution of the solution error a residual-based error estimator is employed. This is then integrated with other components as refinement strategy and mapping algorithm into an adaptive framework. The capability of the proposed scheme is illustrated on an example. Finally the merits of the adopted approach are highlighted and remedies to alleviate its drawbacks are suggested.
